EDGE & CHRISTIAN
VS. HARDYS
VS. DUDLEYS
Tables, ladders, chairs—volatile ingredients in a wrestling match. Put them together in the ring, and you know there’s going to be trouble.
Put them together at WrestleMania, and you have one of the greatest Tag Team showdowns of all time—a three-way face-off of Edge & Christian, the Dudley Boys, and the Hardy Boys.
EDGE & CHRISTIAN
In the fall of 1999, tag team fans began focusing their attention on two up-and-coming teams, Edge & Christian, and Matt and Jeff Hardy, known together as the Hardy Boys (or Hardy Boyz, as it was often styled).
The two teams had a lot in common. They favored an athletic, high-flying style when in the ring. They seemed fearless, willing not just to inflict pain but to dish it out. Both teams had aligned with Gangrel, at different times, as part of the New Brood. And above all, both were talented and ambitious.
Like didn’t attract like, however. Like attracted hate and confrontation. Egged on at times by the blond bimbos’ irreverent sarcasm, the Hardys wished only evil things for Edge & Christian. Edge & Christian returned the sentiment.
The two teams were natural enemies, but they had another incentive to face off when the Terri Runnels Invitational Tournament was announced. The prize in the round-robin tourney was $100,000—and Terri Runnels, the cigar-smoking, P.M.S. (Pretty Mean Sister) Diva who would serve as the winners’ manager. Runnels had mostly left the cigar-smoking gimmick behind with her earlier incarnation as Marlena, but even without it, she was smoking hot.
